UN meeting's Declaration of Principles considers Open Access

A report on SciDev Net from 7th December 2003 details some of the negotiations that have been progressing within the UN for statements supporting Open Access. The statement comes as part of the Declaration of Principles to be issued by the World Summit on the Information Society whose activities will run for the next two years. Currently the draft statement from the initial three day meeting contains strong support for open-access. This report looks at some of the different pressures that are coming to bear on that strong declaration. There has obviously been a good deal of intense lobbying!

The web site for the draft Declaration of Principles has as its para.28:
"We strive to promote universal access with equal opportunities for all to scientific knowledge and the creation and dissemination of scientific and technical information, including open access initiatives for scientific publishing. "
